Dr. Marissa Castello, Naturopathic Doctor

Marissa CastelloMy Approach
My approach as a naturopathic doctor is rooted in Vitalism, a system of medicine that focuses on utilizing the body's innate ability to heal. I tend to draw on many different cultural healing modalities including Ayurveda and Traditional Chinese Medicine to support a natural way of viewing health. Using both natural therapies and the latest medical technology, I am able to get to the root of what is causing illness and disease. Much like a detective, I approach your health comprehensively, acknowledging subtle information from mental, emotional, physical, environmental, and relational health. This holistic approach allows me to understand you as an individual, complete with family and social history, unique symptoms, and goals for attaining optimal health. We work as a team to correct nutritional deficiencies, improve your diet and lifestyle, and prevent the onset of early aging and chronic disease.

My Background
I received my naturopathic medical degree from Bastyr University in Seattle, Washington, recognized worldwide as an academic leader in natural medicine and sciences. My 5 years training included a two year internship at the schoolís downtown Seattle clinic as well as specialized work in counseling, environmental medicine, classical homeopathy, and dermatology. While in Seattle, I provided healthcare at several low income clinics, including Maryís Place, a downtown womenís shelter serving homeless and ethically diverse female patients. I also completed a medical internship at True North Health Center in Santa Rosa, California, medically supervising patients who were participating in the centerís water and juice fasting protocol.

Before attending medical school, I studied at the Natural Epicurean in Austin, Texas where I was immersed in natural foods philosophy and production. I worked as a personal chef for many years, creating food plans for people healing from chronic disease. This experience solidified my understanding of the foundational principle of food as medicine!

I love to run, hike, and ride bikes with my son Lucas. I am an avid and adventurous cook at home and travel regularly. Iím so happy to have a space here at SCNMC and look forward to serving the people of Santa Cruz!
